from the exhibition announcement:
On August 24, 2019, Elijah was murdered by police in Aurora, Colorado after being stopped while walking home from the store. They claimed he resisted arrest after committing no crime. Elijah was a gentle young man who brought joy to his community. His death was a terrible injustice. Continuing this year of charity collaborations with artists, Track 16 and Julia Schwartz are donating 50% of the gross proceeds of this sale to the GoFundMe set up by Elijah’s mother.
Julia Schwartz’s statement on the fundraiser:
In this moment when the virus has put us in lockdown, we are witnessing story after story of mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, trans, gay, black and brown lives all being cut short by senseless acts of routine police violence. Each one is a tragedy, but the picture of Elijah McClain, a 23 year old young man, playing his violin for cats in an animal shelter, absolutely gutted me.
He could be my child.
He could be your child.
As a notorious painter of (and lover of) cats, I wanted to dedicate those works to his gofundme.
